What else you need

AppWand writes real Flutter and Node.js code and runs it with the tools on your computer. Install these first, on any system:

ToolWhy
Flutter SDK (stable)Builds and runs your app. Add Flutter's bin folder to your PATH.
Node.js 20 or newerRuns your app's API. npm comes with it.
MySQL 8 or PostgreSQL 13+Holds your app's data. A local server is easiest to start with.
A GitHub or Google accountYou sign in to AppWand with one of them.

Check your setup in a terminal with flutter doctor and node --version. The getting started guide then walks you through your first app.

Install on Windows

  1. Open the Store pageChoose Get it from Microsoft above. Your browser offers to open the Microsoft Store app.
  2. InstallPress Get (or Install) in the Store. Windows downloads and installs AppWand.
  3. Open itStart AppWand from the Start menu and sign in. Updates arrive through the Store by themselves.

Install on macOS

  1. Download and unzipDownload AppWand-macos.zip. Safari unzips it for you; otherwise double-click the zip in Downloads.
  2. Move it to ApplicationsDrag AppWand into your Applications folder.
  3. Open it the first timeThis early-access build isn't notarized by Apple yet, so macOS asks you to confirm it once. Double-click AppWand, choose Done when macOS says it can't check the app, then open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and choose Open Anyway. On macOS 14 and older you can instead Control-click AppWand and choose Open.
  4. Sign inAfter that first time, AppWand opens like any other app.

Prefer the terminal? This clears the download flag so the app opens straight away:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/AppWand.app

To run the apps you build as macOS desktop apps, also install Xcode. Running them in Chrome or on an Android device works without it.

Install on Linux

  1. Download and unpackDownload AppWand-linux-x86_64.tar.gz and unpack it where you keep your apps:
    mkdir -p ~/.local/opt
    tar -xzf ~/Downloads/AppWand-linux-x86_64.tar.gz -C ~/.local/opt
  2. Run itStart ~/.local/opt/AppWand/appwand. Keep the folder together: the app needs the lib and data folders next to it.
  3. Add it to your app menu (optional)Create a launcher so AppWand shows up with your other apps:
    cat > ~/.local/share/applications/appwand.desktop <<EOF
    [Desktop Entry]
    Type=Application
    Name=AppWand
    Exec=$HOME/.local/opt/AppWand/appwand
    Icon=$HOME/.local/opt/AppWand/data/flutter_assets/assets/brand/app_icon.png
    Categories=Development;
    EOF

AppWand needs GTK 3, which every common desktop already has. If it won't start, install it with sudo apt install libgtk-3-0 (Ubuntu, Debian) or sudo dnf install gtk3 (Fedora).

To run the apps you build as Linux desktop apps, also install clang cmake ninja-build pkg-config libgtk-3-dev. On Linux, AppWand's code editors have syntax colours and search but no live error checking as you type; Check still finds every problem.

Checksums

To confirm a download arrived intact, compare its SHA-256 with the one below (shasum -a 256 <file> on macOS, sha256sum <file> on Linux).

Uninstall

  • Windows: right-click AppWand in the Start menu and choose Uninstall.
  • macOS: drag AppWand from Applications to the Bin.
  • Linux: delete ~/.local/opt/AppWand and, if you made one, ~/.local/share/applications/appwand.desktop.

Your projects stay in Documents/AppWand/Projects either way. They're plain code, so delete them yourself if you no longer want them.
